鲁迅小说两个英译本的对比研究

【摘要】:This paper consists of two major parts. The first part is concerned with translation theories and the second part with the application of translation techniques. It is the author抯 hope that translation theories and techniques can be aptly applied to translation practice. The first part is not merely a review of the existing theories, Chinese or Western. The author also ventures forward with his own opinions on some theoretical issues. First of all, he does offer a general overview of China抯 translation theories, which, according to Luo Xinzhang (1984), are characterized by the artistic translation standards and criteria, and Western translation theories, which are often linguistics-oriented and are represented by the works of Catford, Newmark, Nida, etc. On the basis of the above analysis of the theoretical foundation in translation, the author comes naturally to the next issues: the current debate among the Chinese translation circles on whether translation is art or science as well as whether translation theories are universally applicable or nation-specific. It is not easy to arrive at a definite conclusion on these issues. Still, the present author attempts to show that translation theories are, to a large extent, art-biased. This, however, does not entail that he is in full support of the traditional Chinese theories focused on translation criteria. Rather, he believes that the detailed research on micro-techniques of translation is worth more of our attention. The systematic research made by such scholars as Zhang Peiji and Liu Miqing has contributed far more to the translation practice and learning. On the other hand, the author also believes that it may be worthwhile to try to incorporate such micro-skills under the general principle of A Comparative Study of the Translation Techniques in the Two English Versions of Lu Xun抯 Stories functional equivalence. In the second part of the paper, the author tries to use the micro-techniques as expounded by Liu Miqing and other predominant scholars to explain and appreciate translated texts. From time to time, the author points out that such micro-techniques can be well integrated with Nida抯 theory of functional equivalence. In the course of analysis, the author tries to avoid excessive personal opinions. Instead, his analysis is often based on a contrastive study of two translations made by native speakers. The comparison between the different versions often cast profound light on their merits and demerits, and thus the applicability of certain translation techniques become almost self-evident. This second part is subdivided into four chapters, dealing with such aspects of languages as lexis, syntax, rhetorical devices and cultural information. The author does not intend to exhaust all facets of each aspect. Instead, he concentrates on what seems to be interesting to him or probably challenging to the average learner.
