A Case Study of Autonomous and Independent EFL Learning
【摘要】：Autonomy is widely accepted in language learning. Because of thestudents' different needs and different personalities, autonomous and independent language learning out of the classroom, with the teacher's instructions in learning strategies, is efficient for some introverted students who feel anxious and oppressed in the classroom. This kind of learning is feasible because self-access materials, such as learning materials, libraries, language laboratories, the internet etc. can be available and the students, as adults, have already possessed the ability of controlling over self-assessment for their autonomous learning. The research is done with a learner who learns English independently out of the classroom. The analysis reveals that he does make greater improvement than the classroom learners in motivation of EFL learning and in using strategies, although no obvious progress in the English exam can be found, which proves that English learning is long-time hard work and a longer period of time is usually needed for the students to become more proficient. This study provides with some implications for language learning and teaching.
